There are many options and styles of roofing systems available to homeowners. Asphalt shingle roofing is one of the most popular. Its main draw lies in aesthetic, product performance, ease of installation and value.

Wind Resistance

Wind pulloffs are a common issue when it comes to shingles—especially in hurricane-prone areas. Asphalt shingles have different levels of wind resistance. With proper nailing, fastener pull-through resistance and strong sealant bond, they can withstand even the most extreme conditions and stay put.

Impact Resistance

Impacts, such as those resulting from hail, can damage shingles. Experienced roofers recommend asphalt shingles because they pass the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Standard 2218 tests to determine impact resistance. Such tests can result in ratings of Class 1 through 4, with 4 as the highest and best. In fact, some insurance even companies provide premium discounts for shingles rated Class 4.

Fire Resistance

Most asphalt shingle roof systems have Class A fire-resistance ratings. UL 790 and ASTM E 108 are the test standards used. Class A is the highest level. In the unlikely event of a fire outbreak, you’ll have one less hazard to worry about with asphalt shingles.

Algae Resistance

Algae don’t damage asphalt shingles. But they can affect the appearance of an asphalt shingle roof with discoloration. AR (Algae Resistant) shingles have a special copper composition in their granules. This helps control algae growth.

Solar Reflectance

Special granules reflect some of the sun’s energy and help to keep roof temperatures cooler. This reduces energy consumption when using air conditioning, especially in hot climates. Some cities and states give tax credits to homes with solar reflective roofing. The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) determines solar reflectance and thermal emittance.
